Integrity. Mature confidence. Informed judgment. High performance standards. These are the attributes that characterize the career of Dr. Ronald L. Thompson, earning him the distinction of being named the 2020 NACD Directorship 100 B. Kenneth West Lifetime Achievement award winner. Thompson has been the soul of the privately held Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America (TIAA) since 1995, where he first served as an independent trustee and, since 2008, as independent chair. During that time, Thompson led the TIAA through periods of strategic transformation that evolved the company from a single-line retirement company to a respected Fortune 500 institution that offers a broad range of financial services. However, Thompson’s impact extends well beyond the factors of economic growth and TIAA, as evidenced by letters of support from his many board colleagues.
